Heads Above Leading Brands

Peticular Pens was formed by Steve Vince and Pete Garlick at the beginning of 2012. Based just outside of Ipswich, they design and manufacture bespoke animal shelters.

Steve and Pete, both former conservatory and window installers with over 25 years experience, set up their bespoke business after receiving enquiries from pet owners wanting hygienic, durable and secure long term animal accommodation.

After the first two clients gave glowing feedback, they designed and built a prototype cattery, which they took to the Supreme Cat Show.Their new design attracted vast amounts of interest from breeders and boarders.

The challenge

Traditionally animal housing is made from timber, which even though it’s natural in appearance, needs regular treatment, is difficult to clean and decays rapidly.“We are finding that people are either upgrading to a PVC shelter from a timber one or expanding their existing PVC ones” explained Pete.

“Although many people still use timber shelters, animal centres in particular (and especially the RSPCA) use the PVC shelters because of the hygiene issues. In addition, the Animal Welfare Act 2006 states that materials in a cattery or kennel must be of an impervious material and PVC is perfect. We also use PVC panels and recycled plastic in our shelters so the whole thing can be steam cleaned or jet washed if necessary.”

Why Liniar?

“The animal shelters are basically free standing conservatories. We use the chamfered suite, simply because it’s easy to clean and stops the kitties chewing it. We like the strength it gives us, as it means we don’t have to reinforce the structures with steel and there’s no risk of rust or discolouration,” commented Steve.

“Our flagship double skinned pens are so well insulated due to Liniar’s multi-chambered profile that we have had to invent a way of turning off the heaters when the pens warm up. Our competitors, on the other hand, struggle to even keep their pens at the required temperature.”

“A huge selling point for us in terms of animal welfare is that Liniar profile is 100% lead free – the fact that it is future proof helps us so much as well”.

The business & the future

From small beginnings Peticular Pens is now a leading manufacturer in uPVC animal shelters and the preferred supplier for the RSPCA.

Pete explains:“We have already changed the way people look at animal shelters and have improved upon the initial designs that were available. Our double skinned cat pen at RSPCA Martlesham is the only double insulated free standing cattery in the country and possibly the world. Likewise with our ferret pen – a unique purpose built structure that no one else would do.”

“As for the business, we view our customers as not only the animal rescuers, boarders or breeders but the animals that use the our shelters. We hope that we can make their stay just that little bit better.”

Peticular Pens’ plans for expansion also include Liniar: “Our plans for expansion are ambitious and we see our business growing substantially. We’re now looking at the Liniar Zoom roof so that we can take advantage of using the whole Liniar package.”
