2021 Home Trends on the Horizon

During 2020 we witnessed a shift in consumer buying habits, for two primary reasons: online versus in-person shopping and the inability to socialise. The pandemic forced homeowners to spend more time within their homes and gardens and as noted throughout the industry, this has driven demand to unforeseen spikes across products such as fencing, decking and patio and bi-folding doors.

As we begin a new year, systems company Liniar explores the latest online predictions for exterior home trends in 2021.

Cottagecore

When beginning our research, this new term kept cropping up. With over 300 Pinterest boards dedicated to the Cottagecore movement – because it’s now more than just a trend – and articles in Country Living and across mainstream news channels, it’s hard to ignore.

Essentially, Cottagecore celebrates rural, country living – including meshing the indoors and outside, bringing natural elements within the home or blurring the lines between indoor and outdoor spaces. While this is primarily an interior design trend, there are many elements that will benefit the fenestration industry.

Decking and fencing

Giving outdoor spaces a makeover will still be bang on trend in 2021. With flexible working between home and office here to stay for some time yet, consumers are already preparing for the warmer months.

Products which are low maintenance and stylish but also have a minimal impact on their carbon footprint are in vogue. With a decking and fencing range that’s made in Britain, part-recycled and fully recyclable, Liniar customers will be able to meet these expectations for outdoor products.

Adding shelter and shade

Following on from remodelling outdoor spaces comes the rise of the pergola. As our summers get warmer, British and Irish families are looking to provide both shelter and shade in their outdoor living spaces, and adding a pergola is ideal for properties who don’t have the space for a conservatory or orangery.

Making the most of light

The already popular lantern roof is set to continue its upward trend with homeowners looking to bring more natural light into their properties. Additionally, skylights (or ‘roof windows’ according to Country Living) are set to soar in popularity through 2021 as families seek to add light to rooms such as bathrooms, bedrooms and rooms that are too small for traditional lanterns.

Exterior makeovers

Think cladding. According to homebuilding.co.uk, the twelfth best way to add value to a home is to give it an exterior makeover. Upgrading old timber cladding to woodgrain foiled PVCu cladding, combined with natural or painted brickwork (white bricks are also tipped for popularity in 2021) makes Liniar’s new shiplap cladding an ideal solution.

Statement front doors are also set to make a comeback, and not just in bold colourways. Architectural elements of entry ways will be highly popular, including natural wood or metal effect front doors with glass and sidelights.

More windows!

For homeowners looking to renovate instead of relocate, more windows will be a huge trend. Like lantern roofs and skylights, more windows mean brighter, airy living spaces.

Homeowners will also continue to aspire to their living spaces reflecting more of the outdoors with natural light and views of their surroundings. We expect to see upward trends for bi-fold, patio and French doors to accompany the ‘bringing the outdoors in’ Cottagecore trend.

With the ‘Elevate’ lantern roof ideal for bringing additional light into kitchens, sitting rooms and orangeries and the outdoor and cladding ranges adding kerb appeal, it’s worth considering Liniar. Its timber alternative ‘Resurgence’ window system blends into rural cottages as easily as contemporary homes, and the whole range is colour matched for a perfect finish.

For Liniar customers, 2021 is looking bright.
