Riding High in the Scottish Lowlands

Specialising in home improvements, Aberdeen-based Affordable Windows & Doors LTD has the expertise and experience to take on projects large and small. The company’s outstanding performance in retail, manufacturing and installation has seen it shortlisted as a finalist in the Best New Business category at the 2022 Trades Awards.

Recently, Affordable Windows & Doors completely renovated a holiday home in the village of Cuminestown, rural Aberdeenshire for client Bounty Holiday Lets. The undertaking saw what was once a dated, one-bedroom single storey farmhouse transformed into a luxurious property with a stylishly contemporary interior, complete with a self-contained garden pod, leaving the site capable of comfortably sleeping 6-8 guests in total.

Discussing the client’s requirements, Affordable Windows & Doors director Ryan Hunter states, “Bounty wanted to greatly increase the functionality of the property and thoroughly modernise the interior to make it a comfortable, light and airy space that would provide a wow factor for guests.”

He continues, “To achieve this we chose an open-plan design for the main living area, as well as expanding up into the loft space to create an ensuite master bedroom, and out into the garden with a pod comprising its own bathroom and kitchenette. The scope of the project meant we would be using a wide range of PVCu products and knowing from experience the quality and depth of its ranges, we opted to use Liniar as our primary supplier.”

The main living area is now flooded with natural light using floor-to-ceiling glazing with Liniar profile’s ultra-slim sightlines, not only providing ample illumination but also impressive views of the idyllic surroundings. A Liniar sliding patio door brightens the open-plan kitchen, consolidating the light, airy ambience indoors, while another patio door on the garden pod provides direct access to a stunning deck made with Liniar’s SwitchBoard composite decking. Both the main building and the pod have facades enhanced by Liniar’s Anthracite grey cladding, giving low-maintenance weather protection with a modern look that ties the whole project together.

Commenting on working with Liniar products Ryan says, “Besides the premium design and quality, I really like the benefit of a guaranteed colour match across the entire product range. It’s also easy to order as a job lot, since all the PVCu components are from a single supplier.”

He adds, “I was very impressed with the decking, and feel the narrower boards we chose give a neater look. Liniar decks arrive in kit form, which is so helpful and the product itself is easy to install. We had to change the bungalow’s roofline to accommodate a modern guttering system and add a timber framework to ensure a flush fit for the shiplap cladding – once we’d done that, the cladding was really easy to install too.”

The completed project looks spectacular, and Affordable Doors & Windows already has another Bounty Holiday Lets renovation in the pipeline, a testament to the company’s ability to deliver customer satisfaction.

On his plans for the future, Ryan tells us, “We’re currently manufacturing 40-50 frames per week, and are carefully monitoring and growing our capacity. There is potential for us to begin 24-hour manufacturing operating a split shift in the near future, helping more home and business owners to install energy efficient windows and doors.”
